Nyami Nyami Records reissues “Baleka”, the visionary new wave, post-disco and mbira from ZIMBA :.
Since mid-70s and for ten years straight around Netherlands, Zimbabwean expatriate Phil Arosa and partner Marga played as ZIMBA band through clubs even if they only have one studio recorded song, Baleka, that came out out in 1983. During the previous decade he fled Southern Rhodesia’s apartheid (now Zimbabwe) to settle in the Netherlands where he keep playing and writing music but only the iconic and visionary track Baleka end up being officially released. Now French Nyami Nyami Records headed by Charles Houdart and Antoine Rajon prepared a reissue with a long and short version of the original backed by a remix of London´s The Comet Is Coming and Blackjoy (Siwo) from Paris with an edit to revisit the piece. It is incredible how ahead of its time Baleka was, a blend of post-disco, post-afro pop that takes advantage of multi-cultural Zimbabwe tradition such the South African music and former Zaire influences (subtle cosmic guitar notes?), the rich sacred mbira tradition complemented by ngoma percussion and chants that we can track forward by musical genealogy to blues or as cleverly mentioned in the press release, the new wave. It is expected to be released the April 4th, vinyl and digital. Can find it on Bandcamp here.
